Discovered by Columbus in 1493, Dominica changed hands between Britain and France numerous times, and gained independence from Britain in 1978.
Although Dominica is an English Speaking country, the French influence has contributed to the additional Patois dialect spoken by many locals.
The influence of these two distinct European cultures, along with the strong African heritage and the continued presence of the Indeginous Kalinago people has resulted in an eclectic cultural blend.
